If you have Voip and are experiencing quality issues with the audio, dropped or missed calls, and generally just poor quality with your Voip, then making sure you voip modem is directly behind your
It's important that You have the equipment set up as follows: Modem to ATA to Router to Other Router, etc. If not, there will eventually be problems with your phone service (Nating issues). Before you set up your equipment in order, you need to get the IPs for each piece of equipment. I find this easiest to do by plugging your laptop/desktop into each equipment one at a time and obtain it's IP. This might seem very time consuming at first but once you do it a few times it's pretty easy and quick.
First plug your computer straight into the DSL modem and go to the command prompt and type in "ipconfig /release" then type in "ipconfig /renew". This will release and renew the IP. The DSL modem's IP should then be under "Default Gateway". You then want to paste it into notepad or write it down for future reference. Also before you get out of the IP settings you will see two "DNS Servers" IPs. Write or copy these down also because we'll need them to input into the Voip adapter.
Now open your web browser and type in that IP and it should bring you to the DSL modems configuration page. Each modem's configuration page is different so it's hard to explain exactly where the DMZ settings are. Usually it's under an Advanced tab or Advanced Settings tab and will give you the option of enabling DMZ and it will fill in an IP that starts with "192.168.0." or "192.168.1." and you will have to fill in the last number. In this last number put in "200" so your DMZ setting is now set to "on" and the IP next to it is "192.168.0.200". Click "Save Changes" or "Apply" and the modem should reset and apply these changes. Now that the DSL modem is in DMZ mode you need to set the Voip adapter to static mode.
Unplug the DSL modem from your computer and now plug the Voip adapter into your computer so you can find it's IP address (it's usually 192.168.0.1 but sometimes not). Do the same thing as before and in command prompt type in "ipconfig /release" then type "ipconfig /renew" and it will give you the ATAs IP. Open your browser and type it into the address bar to log into the ATA. Once logged in, look for something that says "Wan Setup" it may be under advance settings.
1. Change "Connection Type" from "DHCP" to "Static IP".
Static IP Settings
2. Change the "Static IP" to the IP that you changed in the DSL modem (example: 192.168.0.200).
3. Change "NetMask" to 255.255.255.0
4. Change "Gateway" to 192.168.0.1
Optional Settings
5. Change "Primary DNS" to the first IP you copied down from the command prompt when you had the DSL modem hooked up.
6. Change "Secondary DNS" to the second IP you copied down from the command prompt when you had the DSL modem hooked up.
7. After all this make sure you click "Submit All Changes" to save the settings. The ATA will reset after about 5 seconds.
